Call for Papers

Please note that the deadline for abstract submissions has passed and late submissions can only be considered in exceptional circumstances on a case by case basis in relation to cancellations.

The conference theme of ‘Discourses of Hope’ encompasses the role of language and other semiotic modalities in examining and promoting peace, reconciliation, learning and change.

The Congress is scheduled over 5 days from July 18–22. As part of the conference an additional program of sessions devoted to Language in Education will be scheduled from 9am–5.30pm on Wednesday July 20.

Abstracts of 200 words for presentations engaging with the conference themes or with other aspects of the theory or application of SFL were invited for submission by February 25, 2005.

Abstracts for Congress Sessions (excluding Language in Education day)

There will be two kinds of sessions: papers and colloquia.

  • Papers will be allocated a 40 minute slot (30 minutes + 10 minutes discussion). Please note that only one paper can be accepted from any participant but that an additional colloquium contribution will be possible.
  • Colloquia will focus on a particular theme and involve a number of presenters. Sessions will run for 3hrs 15mins (11am - 1pm and continuing 2.15 - 3.30pm). The purpose of colloquia is to encourage a wider range of thematically focussed interactions than is possible in a strand of 40 minute parallel papers and priority will be given to submissions taking advantage of this weaker framing. Submissions should include a brief presentation of the colloquium's theme, an overview/timetable of the programmed activities and an abstract from each of the presenters.
